2024 Construction Season Highlights
During the 2024 construction season, significant progress was made in three main areas:
Southern Section of the Project - realigned and paved 2 miles of Highway 4 which is now open to the public.
Hunt Road – a new connector road segment between Highway 4 and existing Hunt Road is now open to the public.
Near Nassau Creek – began construction of a mechanically stabilized earth (retaining) wall. Final work on the wall is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
The 2024 construction season is scheduled to conclude by late November.
2025 Construction Plans
Work is scheduled to resume in spring 2025, with project completion targeted for late 2025.
Next year’s construction will concentrate on completing the retaining wall near Nassau Creek, intersections with Highway 4 at the Poole Station Road and Appaloosa Road, as well as the northern end (final 1 mile section) of the new, realigned Highway 4 mainline.
When work restarts, a temporary but full closure will be necessary to reconfigure the intersection of Highway 4 and Poole Station Road. Specific details, including dates, times, and detour routes will be provided as they become available.
Project Overview
The State Route 4 (SR4) Wagon Trail Realignment Project is improving safety along a 6.5 mile stretch of Highway 4 between Angels Camp and Copperopolis.
Improvements include:
Widening, grading and paving the roadway.
Removing dangerous curves.
Installing new culverts and animal crossings.
Improving overall road safety for the traveling public.
The Wagon Trail Project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 begins at Bonanza Mine Way and continues to Appaloosa Road for a total of 3.2 miles and is currently under construction.
In coordination with Caltrans and Calaveras Council of Governments (CCOG), the County of Calaveras Department of Public Works (County) is the lead agency on this project.

FAQs
When does Phase 2 start?
Phase 2, which includes work from Appaloosa for approximately 3 miles eastward towards Angels Camp began in 2022 with the award of a design contract. Design and Right of Way work for this phase should be completed in 2026. Construction will begin sometime after.
Can materials from the project site such as rocks or dirt be sold or given away?
Materials that are used for the project or dug up from the project site are property of the contractor and are not available for sale or to be given away. The public is not permitted on site of the project for safety.
Why was there a construction delay in early 2023?
Construction of the project is progressing, however, additional environmental work had to be completed before construction could be restarted after the winter.
When will Phase 1 be complete?
Phase 1 includes construction work between Bonanza Mine and Appaloosa Road. Work is scheduled to be complete in this area in 2025.

Funding
At the beginning of Phase I construction, the design engineer’s project cost estimate was $27 million. After necessary archeological preservation work, the project is now expected to cost $53 million. Project funding sources include Local, State, and Federal sources, including: State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) funds, State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Regional Improvement Program, SB1 Local Partnership Program (LPP) funds and County Road Impact Mitigation (RIM) funds. The County and Calaveras Council of Government are currently working to secure funding for Phase 2 of the Project, which extends from Cherokee Creek Bridge to Stockton Road near Angels Camp.
